Some places just catch your eye, and Irwin’s was always one of those for me. I drove past it often, always charmed by the little corner building and its old-school neighborhood feel, and made a mental note that I wanted to paint it someday. When the original was commissioned, I was thrilled to finally get the chance. Of course, painting it sent me digging into its history, which only made me like it more. The building dates to 1909–10, and the corner has been a neighborhood grocery and gathering place for more than a century. The Irwin family took over the grocery in the late 1920s, and since 2000 it’s been home to Irwin’s Bakery & Café. One of those places that has quietly remained part of the neighborhood while everything around it changes.
