Darrell’s Tavern is one of those places that has quietly shaped my Seattle life. With its original décor, those unmistakable seventies whirling bar stools, and the black velvet paintings on the walls, it feels untouched by time in the best possible way. I’ve spent many nights here watching friends’ bands play, including an especially memorable night seeing my friend Micah’s band, Wet City Rockers, when the room was electric and everything felt exactly right. The music at Darrell’s is always honest and alive, sometimes local, sometimes part of a bigger festival energy, spilling out into the outdoor space when the weather allows, but never pretentious or priced out of reach. The owner is always kind and genuinely present. When he saw this painting on Instagram and said he had to have it, I drove it over myself. He told me how honored he was that I painted his place, but the truth is I’m the honored one. In a Seattle where fancy hoo-haws are steadily taking over, Darrell’s feels like a spiritual center, a place that still belongs to the people who give life to our city.
